Cathy Standiford writes “activist poetry,” essays on social justice and issues affecting women and girls, and the occasional song. Activist-Poet is not her first blog; she maintained a Focus on Women blog for Soroptimist International of the Americas from 2009 – 2014. (Note: Cathy’s Focus on Women posts are now archived on the LiveYourDream.org site, powered by Soroptimist.) Currently Cathy is working on a historical novel.
A retired city manager and local government consultant, Cathy now spends most of her time writing, mentoring and volunteering. She is a volunteer mentor for WriteGirl, a non-profit community of women writers that promotes creativity and self-expression to empower teen girls. She also is a long-standing member of Soroptimist, an international volunteer organization committed to advancing the economic empowerment of women and girls through access to education. Cathy leads her local club’s Dream It, Be It program, which provides career mentoring for teen girls who face obstacles due to poverty, violence or teen pregnancy.
Cathy also has an active faith life as a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, where she sings in the Chancel Choir and co-leads a support group for women survivors of sexual assault.
In addition to writing and volunteering, Cathy enjoys reading, knitting, cooking, traveling around the world and walking close to home with her husband, John and their dog, Lemon.
